Without electric power generation and transmission, most of us won't be able to have or enjoy electricity. But as crucial as these two are, it's electricity distribution that determines whether or not we can power our homes and offices.

The Process of Electricity Distribution

Power plants generate electrical power and transmit it to their respective substations. Since most forms of electric power transmission require higher voltage to minimize power loss, substations use transformers to reduce the initial transmission voltage to a level more favorable for distribution.

Electrical power is then safely and effectively distributed to various users through the use of power lines. Before this power can be used in the residential and commercial establishments that signed up for it, however, additional transformers must further lower the voltage carried by these power lines to make it suitable for consumer use.

Though power plants have been known to transmit DC power when necessary, the electrical power generated, transmitted, and distributed is primarily AC. AC power distribution is simpler, cheaper, and leaves less room for error or loss. Since we use AC power in our homes and offices, AC power distribution is much more convenient, and can save a considerable amount of money on power conversion equipment alone.
